Optimizer? Youpi it is that

Tuesday, February 27th, 2007

A while back I did a post about Trimthefat which is a great GUI for lipo. It strips universal binaries of the architecture you don’t use to save space.
Another application I’ve found that is really handy for getting saving wasted space is Youpi Optimizer. While I wish I was a bit more multicultural unfortunately I […]

OSX Planet

Monday, February 26th, 2007

I love EarthDesk it’s really neat. However it costs money and I am a cheap bastard. OSX Planet is an open source application that does the same thing. Some great things like 30 minute updating cloud cover, earthquake points, volcanoes, even satellites!
I love the idea that a community can make something like this that is […]

GTD Item Ticker

Sunday, February 25th, 2007

I keep posting about things I want to build in Cocoa, not stuff I have, but I promise that I’m going to get there and make some of these.
Today’s post refers back to the one I did on Thursday. I’ve been using a sticky notes in the top right hand corner of my screen for […]

Avoiding distraction

Thursday, February 22nd, 2007

This week has been chaos for me. I’m trying desperately to rein in all the things I have and to find some focus on the tasks in hand. When everything is going to pot, how does one avoid being distracted?
I find now more than ever I wish I had a proper GTD system in place […]

Got Hillegass will code

Friday, February 9th, 2007

My copy of Cocoa: Programming for OS X arrived today, and even just reading through the first couple of chapters on the tube I am bowled over by how good it is.
Not only is this the best book I’ve seen on Cocoa yet, it’s probably also one of the best books on a computing topic […]

Twitter, Quicksilver, Keychain and the phantom credit snatcher!

Thursday, February 8th, 2007

So I was going to write a post about how to waste more of your life using Twitter but do it more efficiently using Quicksilver. I had half a script written, but I thought I would integrate it with Keychain to make it really nice.
After a little searching it turns out Coda Hale has already […]

Nice, nice, nice, Niceplayer

Tuesday, February 6th, 2007

Niceplayer is a FOSS video player for Mac. It just updated to version 0.95 and I've decided I like it better than the VLC player. Not only does it do completely chromeless video out of the box but it also happily floats on top. This really suits me as I like to watch videos while [...]

Simple tricks are often the best

Saturday, February 3rd, 2007

I found an interesting tip on how to integrate Quicksilver and App Delete on Mac OS X hints. The tip was cool, however I could have done it myself.
What did interest me was that cmd+backspace deletes files. It's one of those little things I never knew that turns out to be really useful.

Stop growling at me and get on with it

Tuesday, January 23rd, 2007

Steve says to me on IMDisable menu icon for GowlTunesdefaults write com.growl.growltunes GrowlTunesWithoutMenu -bool YES¹
Nice find Steve, we don't use the GrowlTunes icon, we just want the growl of, well, tunes.
¹Just run that last line in a terminal window and restart GrowlTunes.

Big brother is watching you, make the most of it

Saturday, January 20th, 2007

It's no surprise that I scrum, given my previous posts about scrumming. While I like using Quicksilver to make notes, using the Quicksilver logger was proving too much to remember. Instead I am back to using an application I have used before.
Onlife poles a list of the applications you are running to ask them what [...]

The ultimate Quicksilver manual

Thursday, January 18th, 2007

If you have a Mac you need to read this! The excellent Howard Melman has written what has to be one of the most complete pieces of documentation I have ever seen. This 89 page guide covers every feature and plugin Quicksilver has. It even includes some of the more experimental stuff like the PyObjC [...]

Money money money

Tuesday, January 16th, 2007

I've been using iBank for a little while now to manage my finances. I really this app that rivals programs like Microsoft Money and Quicken. It's full of features, and helps you manage your budgets, your bank accounts, and balance and consolidate spending against your bank statements.
iBank does integrate with my online banking by importing [...]

Quicksilver; Agile Scruming; Laziness

Thursday, December 28th, 2006

At Yahoo! we use Scrum as part of our development process. While I really like Scrum, what it means for me personally is that I have to write a daily report of what I have been working on counted to the half hour.
Since I like to do everything with Quicksilver I've written a custom action [...]

Universal tubbiness be gone

Tuesday, December 26th, 2006

In the post Christmas period while we are all loosening our belts you can reduce the size of those universal apps you've downloaded using Trim The Fat. Simply drag and drop universal binaries to remove the unwanted PPC/Intel part. I saved around a gigabyte, which is a pretty decent amount on my laptop.
Trim The Fat [...]

Applescript glue; dropplet magic

Thursday, December 21st, 2006

Norm wrote a super perl script to ensure that when you open iCal files sent to a mailing lists it uses the correct to address. This avoids having to have all the mailing list addresses in your own card in your address book. However he did note that OS X doesn't allow you to set [...]

Hide any Mac program’s dock icon

Sunday, October 22nd, 2006

Since Dockless.app is now broken I've been looking for a workaround. Here it is: macosxhints.com - Hide any program's dock icon. You have to edit plists shuffle, apps around and some other nonsense, but it seems to work. I'm planning to build this out into another Dockless.app type app for Tigerinos.
