Yet more web server mucking about

Thursday, May 31st, 2007

So a fringe benefit of the server being down today was I noticed that my blog hasn’t been updating. I’m not sure exactly why yet, I think it’s something to do with a cron job that is mucking about with the database. I’m going to be back posting the missing items, but not all at […]

London Dorkbot 48; Art geek wanking (in a good way)

Wednesday, May 30th, 2007

Neil and I went to Dorkbot last night. I love Dorkbot but I haven’t been to one in about 8 months. We arrived at a smarter venue than the previous ones I’ve been to. They were having it in an art space near in the East End. We got collared by some from the art […]

Oh Whip me baby! Feed me; Feedwhip RSS for any web page

Tuesday, May 29th, 2007

Simon Willison linked to Feedwhip. I love this idea. It’s very much like a Mac OSX App I’d been using, Changes Meter. The basic idea is that it provides an RSS feed to changes that happen on a web page that doesn’t have a feed. I use my feed reader a lot for all sorts […]

SymSMB 2.0 Beta

Monday, May 28th, 2007

Telexy have released a beta of SymSMB 2.0. You need to sign the application to your IMIE so you can use. I wrote a guide on how to sign SIS applications because it turned out not to be very obvious.

How to Sign Nokia’s S60 Symbian SIS applications

Monday, May 28th, 2007

Nokia wants to protect you from all the bad boogymen in internetland. It insists that all fully signed S60 applications go through a QA procedure. I think this is a good thing. The last thing I want is a virus chomping up my expensive data rate on my mobile phone. However it does mean you […]

This Service; Add script to your Mac OSX services menu

Sunday, May 27th, 2007

After the talk I gave this week one of my colleagues, Norm recommended ThisService. Similar to Platypus ThisService lets you make services out of scripts. The Daring Fireball blog has a good example of ThisService in action to do Google lucky searches.
Services combined with Menu-master to assign shortcuts are pretty awesome. Although you can also […]

10 Mac OSX Apps you probably didn’t know existed

Saturday, May 26th, 2007

This is a Keynote talk I did at work as a fill-in for our Lightning Talk series. Marco asked me to publish it. It’s reasonably sparse but all these apps were chosen because I think they are useful in some meaningful way. They aren’t in any particular order and this is certainly not an exhaustive […]

Settlers of Catan

Friday, May 25th, 2007

The lovely Dorward invited me to play Settlers of Catan with Neil.
It’s a great board game that takes place on an island called Catan. The players complete to become the dominant force on the island. While there is no actual combat in standard game there are several ways to be passively aggressive. This means that […]

Back talk is good. Mozilla talkback is a public service

Thursday, May 24th, 2007

Today everyone’s favourite FOSS project, The Mozilla Foundation, are in my good books.
While tracking down some weird bug at work. I found out the that all those talkbacks you submit when your browser crashes are publicly available. This is super if you are getting reported issues with Firefox on your site. Working with your knowledge […]

How not to do RSS/Atom Feeds; Or Smart Lists NetNewsWire; Yahoo Pipes to the rescue

Monday, May 21st, 2007

I love iGTD. It’s an awesome piece of software. Bartek works really hard on it and it has a thriving community. Mostly Bartek announces new releases on a thread on the iGTD forums. The forums software is PHP Bulletin Board.
However it commits a heinous crime against feeds. While I do browse the forums, I only […]

49p Worth of Stupitiy; Credit and Debit Cards Make Customers Happy

Sunday, May 20th, 2007

So I was doing some DIY for my Wife’s next art show in a couple of weeks and I picked up some stuff from Wickes. What really got up my nose was the £5 minimum to purchase using my card. I wanted to spend £4.77 but I couldn’t purchase my items without finding another 23p. […]

N95 Bluetooth is super fast

Saturday, May 19th, 2007

Really busy day helping my wife with stuff so just a quick observation about my Nokia N95. The bluetooth file transfer seems super quick compared to my N80. Even though the images are bigger it seems like I’m downloading them faster. My Mac says it’s going over 100kb/s. Which isn’t half bad. Hell, I remember […]

WCAG 2.0 New call for review of updated public draft

Friday, May 18th, 2007

The “final” draft of the WCAG 2 got knocked back for revisions. The working group has released its first draft after making revisions which it says address all the comments. I got an email from Judy Brewer who heads the WAI asking for comments by 27th April 2007. If you haven’t already seen this draft […]

Flickr; Comment Threats; IP Protection Marketplace

Thursday, May 17th, 2007

There was a story which has been buzzing around this week about Flickr. This is something that has always scared my wife about using Flickr. One of the Flickr’s users, Rebekka Guðleifsdóttir, found that a company in Britain was printing and selling her work on Ebay without her permission. They gave her no royalties no […]

Sad; Yahoo we can do better than this

Tuesday, May 15th, 2007

Kestrell posted something that made me really sad. Why I wish Yahoo would just stop trying to b***s*** me that they care about accessibility expresses her frustration using the Yahoo groups product.
As someone who’s spent a lot of time trying to improve the state of accessibility on the web, I find it especially disheartening that […]
