How to add users to a group with the command line on a mac

Posted by sh1mmer on Apr 21, 2007 in Mac

To do what it says on the tin (or at least in the title) run:

sudo dscl -p / -append /Groups/GROUPNAMEHERE users USERNAMESHERE

It was a pain to find how to do this, so I thought I would post it up to make it easier for others. I discovered that www (the Mac apache user) is not in the wheel group so I added it. It conveniently allows me to chgrp stuff for apache to be able to write too as well as my own user.

I know it’s going to be chocked full of amazing stuff with lots of pictures on Flickr for those who aren’t there. Please, please sign up if you want to hack.

If you haven’t seen TED before you should check it out. The TED site has a ton of videos from previous conferences on a massive range of topics. The speakers they get are awesome so expect to be inspired. This is the kind of thing I like to watch to get my creative juices flowing.

Fantastically Hack-tastic; Self-healing web implementation

Posted by sh1mmer on Apr 17, 2007 in General

Recently Yahoo! had an internal hack day. Hack days are a great way to allow the many talented people who I work with to build some amazing things. While I can’t talk about most of the stuff going on, I can talk about our implementation of self-healing web won the best of show award.

I want to thank the most excellent Big Stu who stayed up a gruelling 36 hours with me to get our hack finished. Without him this never would have happened.

Christo Lacy-Hulbert, Darren Foreman and Ed Eliot for their help. You guys made a big difference.

This is a new thing for me because I’m not really sure how much I can say. However we are going to be using significant parts of self-healing healing concept soon. When I’ve clarified what is acceptable I’ll describe what I think is a really easy way to start using the concept in your organisation.

In lieu of any actual content here are some self-obsessive photos of me with my prize, although the wife did make me take the second one. “Tom getting his prize” by Christian and “Tom Hughes-Croucher” by Rosemarie (my wife).

Sparkle for Web apps?

Posted by sh1mmer on Apr 16, 2007 in General

For anyone who has used a Mac app with Sparkle in it (Colloquy, Adium to name a couple) knows what a breeze they are to update.

While I appreciate Mint helpfully tells me when there is an update, I wonder if it could do more. Sparkle is actually a rather simple thing. It:

  1. Checks for a new version,
  2. downloads it to a temporary space,
  3. closes the app copies in the new files/binaries,
  4. restarts the app,
  5. and deletes the temporary files,
  6. Fin.

I wonder if with the magic of Curl/Wget etc this would be possible for a web app to do. It could shut itself down using an .htaccess with temporary redirects to send everything to a holding page. Then update itself by copying the new files in and remove change the .htaccess back to the regular state to allow access again.

This may become yet another side project to make a PHP version of Sparkle.

Running daily; sending my inner umpa lumpa packing

Posted by sh1mmer on Apr 15, 2007 in General

So last weekend during the long bank holiday I attempted to start running daily. After doing it for 3 days the working week soon aborted my ambitioin.

Well this coming week I am going to attempt to do it again. I’ve been blogging daily for quite some time now, and I want to extend my daily routine to include running. Blogging exercises my writing, research and communication skills. Running will only exercise my jiggly lard-arse but that’s OK it needs it.

Although it’s sponsored by the less than pearly white Nike I actually quite like Run London. It has some tools to encourage people to run. They have a route site based on Google maps which allows people to plot route to share with others. These include gradient details, how well-lit at night it is and distances for the routes. It’s a great idea and I’m going to start using it once I get to a stage where getting to the park doesn’t leave me out of breath.

If people have any other suggestions for getting back in shape, or running tips please comment. I’d be really interested in how people motivate themselves and if they run in the morning or evening.

Userfriendly mention Yahoo!’s unlimited email storage, which is funny. I just wish we had a building that cool. But, we don’t. Doh!

Primark; Yikes!

Posted by sh1mmer on Apr 14, 2007 in Green

We went shopping in a Primark today, not an experience I’ve had before. It was packed. At least that’s what I thought. I overheard two of the shop assistants talking, apparently said the more experienced of the two, this was a quiet day. It’s kinda unsuprising after the Primark Riot.

While Rosemarie and I rarely splurge on clothes, I would say the select was pretty decent and the prices are very low. I guess that’s where the problem lies. To me I enjoy a cost saving while getting some new clothes because my others have worn out. It seems like many people see the reduction in price as a reason to buy more. While I understand the consumer culture somewhat, being the typical geeky gadget whore, I can’t say I like it. Especially when basics like clothes become almost disposable.

I wonder at the culture that a store like Primark brings and it makes me think of why I became vegan. I don’t object to the consumption of meat. What I object to is the culture which insists on the over-consumption of meat so strongly that it is necessary to have factory farms. These places where living, feeling creatures are treated with the indifference of commodity to be handled to maximise yield. Gone are notions of quality and ethics, only the ability to produce the most (marginally) acceptable goods at the lowest price matters.

While I don’t expect everyone to become a Vegan, think about shops like Primark and ask yourselves if you want to create a dirty disposable world with poorly paid labourers. I don’t, and I’m not sure how much longer I will shop at Primark.
